Every TikTok guide, every Instagram growth account, every LinkedIn creator post lists the same 10 to 15 "best practices": strong hook, fast pacing, visual variety, clear CTA, engagement prompt, optimal length, text overlays, factual accuracy, and so on.
We tested them. All of them. Against real performance data.
The result is that the best-practice list is a ranking, not a checklist. Two of them move reach by 4 to 14x. A few move it 2x. And some of them correlate with more views, not fewer, when they're "violated."

How the audit works
Every video in our dataset is run through the same AI auditor. The auditor tags every violation of a "best practice" with three fields:
Practice: what rule was violated (pacing, strong hook, call to action, video length, visual variety, factual accuracy, etc.).
Severity: Minor, Major, or Critical.
Details: a sentence explaining the specific issue and where in the video it happens.
Across 4,893 videos from 43 creators on TikTok and Instagram over roughly 10 months, we grouped violations by type and compared the average views of videos flagged for that violation to videos that weren't flagged for it. Same audit framework, same analysis engine, consistent methodology.
Here's what came out.
Finding 1: Pacing violations cost you 14x your views. This is the single biggest variable in the audit.

Pacing is a category killer. A video with bad pacing (the auditor's language for "the video drags, transitions feel sluggish, or information density doesn't match runtime") averages 5,384 views. Remove the pacing flag and averages climb to 74,400. That's 14x.
This is not a subtle finding and it's not on most "best practice" lists. Nobody's writing the Pacing Guide. They should be.
Finding 2: Weak hooks cost you 4x. Critical hook flags cost you 17x.
Hooks get talked about more than pacing, and for good reason, but the severity distribution is the story.

A Minor hook flag ("the hook works, but it's a little slow" or "the opening line could be sharper") correlates with 31,571 views, only a ~2.5x drop off the 83k average. Not catastrophic.
A Major or Critical hook flag, though (meaning the hook doesn't work at all, or fails within the first 1.5 seconds), drops averages to 4,945 to 6,319 views. That's 17x worse than a clean video.
The takeaway is not "all hooks are created equal." It's that a partially weak hook still passes. A fully broken hook is a content-level catastrophe.
Finding 3: Length rules are mostly wrong.
This one contradicts basically every "keep it short" guide:

Minor length issues (slightly longer than optimal) average 158,514 views, more than double the all-video average. Only Critical length issues (the video is dramatically too long for its content, "three minutes explaining a one-minute idea") actually tank reach.
This tracks with what we found in the viral-video data study: 90-second-plus runtime videos outperform sub-15 second videos by 31x. Runtime is mostly a non-issue until it becomes obviously excessive for the content. "Keep it under 60 seconds" is advice, not a rule the algorithm actually punishes.
Before you trim a video to "keep it under X seconds," ask whether the cut improves pacing. If yes, cut. If no, leave the runtime alone. Pacing beats duration every time.
Finding 4: Factual accuracy violations correlate with higher views (and this is not a compliment to the algorithm).
Factual accuracy flags cover cases where the video makes a claim that's misleading, unsupported, or just wrong. The averages:

Videos with factual accuracy issues average 1.5x more views than videos without them. This is not the data endorsing dishonesty. It's the data describing how the algorithm rewards outrage-driven, controversial, or unverified content because those videos drive comments and shares.
The practical implication is that "be factually accurate" is a creator integrity rule, not an algorithmic rule. The algorithm will happily push a misleading video to 10x the views of a boring accurate one. Treat that as a hazard, not a how-to.
Finding 5: CTA rules are drastically overrated.
We got 744 videos flagged for CTA issues, more than any other category. Their average: 46,071 views. Clean videos (no CTA flag): 83,874. The gap is real, 1.8x, but modest compared to pacing or hooks.
In our earlier caption study we found that videos with an implied CTA (the ending implies the action) averaged 138,650 views, while videos with a direct CTA ("follow for more, comment below") averaged 72,379. Direct CTAs depress watch time because they signal "here's the ask," which cues viewers to swipe.
The practical version: a good video with no explicit CTA beats a good video with a heavy-handed one. CTA best practices as usually stated are mostly wrong.
The 20.5M view example: what a clean audit looks like

Clear and concise communication — a lot of specific information delivered fast.
Strong visual presence — direct eye contact and expressive gesturing.
Actionable advice — each point is a specific tip viewers can apply immediately.
Effective use of text overlays — captions reinforce the spoken word.
The video runs under 60 seconds, has no decorative elements, no intro, no "hey guys," no outro ask. The hook is the first sentence. The pacing is relentless, with a new piece of advice every few seconds. That's what a clean audit actually delivers in practice: pacing and hook execution is impeccable, and everything else falls into place.
What to actually do on Monday
Audit pacing first. If your video has any 3+ second stretch where nothing new is happening, cut it. Pacing is the #1 variable in the audit.
Audit your hook second. Is the first sentence a claim, a question, or a pattern break? If it's 'Hey guys,' 'So basically,' or 'Today I'm going to talk about,' rewrite the opening entirely. A Major hook flag costs 17x more than a Minor one.
Stop optimizing for length. Minor length issues don't hurt performance in the data. Only Critical length overruns (video is obviously dragging) do. If your runtime helps the pacing, keep it.
Stop stacking direct CTAs. 'Follow for more' is weaker than ending on the payoff. Implied CTAs beat direct CTAs by nearly 2x on views in our separate caption study.
Don't confuse factual-accuracy issues with algorithm problems. The algorithm will reward controversy. Your audience won't trust you for long if you trade accuracy for reach. That's a creator-integrity call, not a performance one.

Methodology
Dataset: 4,893 distinct videos across TikTok and Instagram Reels, with best-practice audits populated. 43 creators represented. Data pulled from content_audits + scrapes tables on 2026-04-22.
Audit engine: Our proprietary AI auditor runs on every video, tagging each best-practice violation with a practice category, a severity (Minor, Major, Critical), a timestamp, and a details string. The same auditor ran across the entire dataset, so internal biases are consistent.
Method: Violations were normalized into 8 buckets (pacing, hook, visual variety, text overlay, CTA, engagement prompt, length, factual accuracy). For each bucket, we compared the average view count of videos flagged for that violation vs videos that were audited but not flagged for that violation. A video can be flagged for multiple buckets, in which case it's counted in each.
Known limits:
- The audit does not produce completely clean videos at equal rates across creators. Some accounts generate more violation-flagged videos because their baseline style deviates more from the rubric.
- The "Factual Accuracy" finding (violations correlate with higher views) is almost certainly an algorithm effect, not an endorsement of misleading claims. It's included because the correlation is real and because understanding why helps you reason about what the algorithm actually optimizes for.
- Sample sizes per bucket vary widely (44 for Factual, 744 for CTA). Read the directional findings more confidently than the exact numbers for small buckets.
