AI Content Strategy for Coaches (Data From 188 Coaching Videos)

Coaching is one of the hardest creator niches to scale in our data. Most coaches are making the same mistake.

The 188 coaching videos we analyzed averaged 74,447 views, with a 10.1% stuck rate. Not bad. But nowhere near finance (1.2% stuck) or cooking (2.8% stuck). The problem isn't the niche. It's the default content pattern coaches fall into.

Here's what's actually working.

Finding #1: Hot Take beats everything

Average views by hook archetype, coaching videos

The top-performing hook in coaching is Hot Take. Strong opinion, stated directly, upfront. Averaged 198,615 views across 17 videos. 4× the niche average.

Teacher hooks (the default "let me coach you through this" pattern) averaged 46,042. Less than a quarter of what Hot Takes pull.

Example Hot Take hooks that win in coaching:

  • "Stop giving your clients homework. It doesn't work."
  • "The 'riches are in the niches' advice killed my business for 2 years."
  • "Coaching certifications are mostly a scam and here's why."

Each takes a strong position on something coaches typically believe. Friction creates reach.

Finding #2: Trust is the slowest-performing emotion

Average views by emotional trigger, coaching videos

The disaster in coaching content: Trust-based videos averaged 2,457 views. 0.03× the niche median.

Curiosity averaged 94K. A 38× gap between the two emotions coaches default to.

Why does Trust underperform so badly? Coaching creators use it as a proxy for "establishing credibility before getting to the goods." The algorithm doesn't read credentials. It reads retention, engagement velocity, and categorization speed. Trust-building content gets buried because it doesn't provoke fast enough.

Lead with the provocative idea. Let Trust accumulate across many videos, not within a single one.

Why coaching gets stuck more than finance

Finance creators default to Investigator plus Curiosity (the winning combo in their niche). Coaching creators default to Teacher plus Trust (the losing combo in theirs). That one pattern difference explains most of the gap between a 1.2% stuck rate and a 10.1% stuck rate.

The coaching content framework

1

Pillar 1: Hot Take reframes. Hot Take hook, Curiosity or Outrage emotion. 'Your $2K/mo mastermind is selling you back your own ideas.' 45-75s.

2

Pillar 2: Client-scenario proof. Investigator hook, Curiosity. 'Why my client stopped growing at $40K/mo, and what broke the ceiling.' 60-90s.

3

Pillar 3: Contrarian takes on the industry. Contrarian hook, Outrage. 'Every guru says niche down. My 7-figure clients did the opposite.' 60-90s.

4

Pillar 4: Fortune Teller predictions. Fortune Teller hook, Curiosity or Fear. 'The coaching industry is about to change and most coaches aren't ready.' 45-75s.

5

Pillar 5: Story, real client arc. Story hook, Inspiration or Curiosity. 'Here's what the last 6 months with [client type] actually looked like.' 60-90s.

Every pillar deliberately avoids Teacher plus Trust. That's the point.

Length: 60 to 90 seconds

Coaching median was 63 seconds. Stretch toward the longer end. Coaching content needs:

  • The setup (3 to 5s)
  • The reframe / claim (10 to 15s)
  • The reasoning / evidence (20 to 40s)
  • The takeaway (10 to 15s)

Rush that into 15 to 25 seconds and the video feels shallow. 60 to 90 seconds lets the reframe land with enough weight to get shared.

Sample week for a coach

Three videos, winning patterns only

  • Mon: Hot Take reframe. "Most 'mindset work' is procrastination in a trench coat." (Outrage, 60s)
  • Wed: Client-scenario proof. "This is the one skill my top client learned that 10x'd revenue." (Curiosity, 75s)
  • Fri: Contrarian industry take. "Niching down costs more than it saves for sub-$20K/mo coaches." (Outrage, 60s)

Three videos. All winning patterns. Zero Teacher hooks. Zero Trust-first emotional framing.

The bottom line

If your coaching content isn't growing, the issue isn't your expertise. It's the pattern you're wrapping it in. Teacher plus Trust plus short-length is the coaching death combo. Hot Take or Contrarian plus Curiosity plus 60 to 90s is what's actually working.

Switch the framing. Same expertise. Very different reach.
